Hi guys, in this post, I will share some of the lessons I’ve learnt during my time at Ewha. I came to Korea and entered Ewha in 2017 and it feels like a long time has passed since I was a freshman. I’ve experienced a lot of things in Korea that I would probably never forget. Here’s what I’ve learnt as an international student at Ewha.
Firstly, I’ve learnt to be more independent as I live abroad by myself. Living alone means that you’ll have to take care of yourself, make sure to eat proper meals, do your own laundry, clean the house chores regularly, etc. You’ll be “adulting” and figuring things out very often. It could be hard and frustrating sometimes but it’s gonna turn out fine at the end.
Secondly, as I spend more time with myself, I’ve learnt to embrace solitude. It’s great to live in a different country and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. But there comes a time when you’ll feel lonely out of the blue. For me, these moments doesn’t happen often but if I’m feeling lonely, I’ll probably treat myself to something good like an ice cream or a movie. It’s perfectly fine to go to the theaters by yourself and I’ve done it a few times. Eating alone is not a problem and you don’t have to fear what other people think (though in Korea, some restaurants such as K-BBQ do not really entertain solo diners). At Ewha, you’ll many students dining alone at the cafeteria during the day. You can’t expect to have someone accompany you for every meal, so just whenever you’re hungry! This is one of the things I love at Ewha – that you can dine alone without weird looks from others.
Thirdly, it’s important to forge good connections with your professors. Try to go to office hours if you have any questions about the coursework. Let your professors know who you are and ask them for career advice. If you’re interested in going to graduate school, one of the best opinions you can get is from your professors. It can be intimidating to approach a professor but they are here to help you so don’t worry too much!
So these are the lessons I’ve learnt here at Ewha. Let me know if you have any questions 🙂
