Ewha: Places to Visit Around Ewha

Hello~ I’m back with another post today. So the area outside Ewha can be called as Edae (이대), just like how people call Hongdae Hongdae. The Edae area is not big unlike Hongdae or Sinchon but it still has many interesting places and shops around. I’ll be introducing my favourite places in Edae in this post!

First, there is a shop selling Singaporean chicken rice right outside Ewha!!!!! How cool is that. The shop’s name is 까이식당 (Bistro Gai or Gai Sikdang). The address is 53-9 Daehyeon-dong and it’s also located right outside the university. I’ve tried their chicken rice and chicken noodles which are 7,000KRW each. I love the chicken noodles although I think we don’t have the exact same dish in Singapore. The chicken noodles has a tasty broth and the best part is the omelette. The omelette tastes so good with the noodles and the chicken… The chicken rice, on the other hand, is not really to my liking because the rice doesn’t taste at all like the fragrant kind of rice used in the original Hainanese chicken rice. The sauce is also a little foreign (?) to me and is a mix of chilli sauce and soy sauce which does not go well for me for some reason. However, the portion of the chicken was extremely generous and the chicken itself is also pretty good so that’s a redeeming point I guess. My other Singaporean friends who have tried the chicken rice also said they were disappointed after trying it. So, for those Singaporean folks out there in Seoul, I’d recommend going for the noodles instead!!

Next, here are some of my favourite dessert shops/cafes in the Edae area! From top to bottom, Brusters, Gommi Coffee, Ewha Dabang. There are several dessert shops and cafes outside Ewha and I haven’t even tried half of them. They are just too many! Also, on the Everytime application, it has something similar to boards/forums and I usually browse the 벗들의 맛집 board to find restaurants, cafes and shops recommended by other Ewha students.

Ewha Dabang’s atmosphere is unique and great for chatting with friends

Sorry if I’m making you hungry after looking at all the food photos!! I’m a big foodie so I can’t help but share my all favourite food places hahaha. There are also clothes shops and makeup stores in Edae. You are spoilt for choices if you go shopping here and my cousin always visits Edae to buy heaps of makeup and clothes whenever she’s in Korea. That’s it for this post! I hope this has made you excited about visiting Edae in person when you’re in Korea!

Ewha: Insurance

Hello! I’m back with another post on life as a student of Ewha Womans University. This post will be about insurance, the importance of it and some details regarding the insurance I purchased through Ewha.

Question: Do I need to have an insurance to study in Korea?

As you can see from the excerpt above which I took from Ewha’s admission guide, insurance is one of the mandatory things you have to have in order to attend a university in Korea. It is not a rule that only applies to Ewha students. It is a requirement by the Korean government that applies to all international students from all the universities in Korea. If you do not have an insurance, you won’t be able to obtain the visa required for you to study in Korea. Having an insurance also makes you eligible for scholarships within Ewha. You can refer to the scholarships offered to international students by Ewha in this post and these scholarships require you to have an insurance, either from an insurance company of your choice or from the insurance company through Ewha.

Ewha: Course Registration

Hello! I’m back with another post today. So today’s topic will be on the course registration at Ewha. The required credits for graduation, required courses etc will differ depending on your department/major so make sure you check them carefully! Also, this may differ depending on which year you enter the university. So, for example, if you are applying for Division of International Studies in 2019, make sure you check the relevant course guide!!! Here’s a link taken from the Ewha homepage. If you want to take a look at the past courses offered in Ewha, check this link here. This provides a list of the courses offered in the past years and you can also filter it based on different departments and majors. Students use this when they are planning for courses so bookmark this link! The Korean courses can be found here. (These two links are found in ewha.ac.kr → 학사안내  →  강의시간표/강의계획안)

I’ll go through more details of my major, International Studies in the Division of International Studies. There are five required major courses in DIS, of which you need to take three as part of the graduation criteria. The minimum credits you need to take in order to graduate in DIS is 129. Here’s an overview of the International Studies major taken from the DIS brochure from the DIS website.

Ewha: Happy Hour and Korean Cultural Activity Opportunity

Hello! I’m back with another post and this time, it’ll be about the various activities the Office of International Affairs (OIA) offers. Firstly, there’s something called Happy Hour organised by the OIA occasionally. This is kind of like a gathering for international students studying at Ewha and just a time to hang out or meet new friends. Sometimes, there will be a raffle or lucky draw and those who show up to this event will stand a chance to win some prizes. But most importantly, there’s free food provided! Happy Hour is usually held in the afternoon on a weekday so if you’re free, you can attend it and have a free lunch 😀 Last year, we had pizza and it was awesome. I love that the OIA sometimes provide great opportunities to make new friends and enjoy free food.

“The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu” Review

20180427_151913

So last week, I went to watch a traditional Korean performance at Jeongdong Theater called <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>. I’m usually not a performance/musical fan but this was probably one of the best performances I’ve ever seen and I feel like I’m now more willing to spend money on theatrical performances/musicals after watching it. Here’s a genuine review of my personal opinion of this performance.
